چکیده

Palimpsests are large, circular, low-relief impact scars on Ganymede and Callisto. These structures were poorly understood based on Voyager-era analysis, but high-resolution Galileo images allow more detailed inspection. We analyze images of four Ganymedean palimpsests targeted by Galileo: Memphis and Buto Faculae, Epigeus, and Zakar. Ganymedean craters and Europan ring structures are used as tools to help better understand palimpsests, based on morphologic similarities. From analysis of Galileo images, palimpsests consist of four surface units: central plains, an unoriented massif facies, a concentric massif facies, and outer deposits. Using as a tie point the location in these structures where secondary craters begin to appear, outer deposits of palimpsests are analogous to the outer ejecta facies of craters; the concentric massif facies of palimpsests are analogous to the pedestal facies of craters; and the unoriented massif facies and central plains are analogous to crater interiors. These analogies are supported by the presence of buried preexisting structure beneath the outer two and absence of buried structure beneath the inner two units. Our observations indicate that palimpsest deposits represent fluidized impact ejecta, rather than cryovolcanic deposits or ancient crater interiors.  2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Ganymede Craters: Relationships between Spectral Properties and Crater Retention Age

Introduction: Both bright and dark craters occur on Jupiter's satellite Ganymede. The Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) onboard the Galileo spacecraft performed spectroscopic measurements of Ganymede in the spectral range of 0.7 to 5.2 microns [1]. Observations of Ganymede's craters acquired at sufficiently high spatial resolution coordinated with Galileo SSI (Solid State Imaging) obser...

Global Expansion of Ganymede Derived from Strain Measurements in Grooved

Introduction: Grooved terrain on Ganymede records an episode of extensional tectonics and possibly cryovolcanism [1], but the cause of groove formation remains uncertain. With little evidence for surface contraction to balance out extension, various mechanisms have been proposed to increase the interior volume of Ganymede and thus cause global expansion. Global expansion may be caused by the in...

The role of ion cyclotron motion at Ganymede: Magnetic field morphology and magnetospheric dynamics

[1] Ion cyclotron motion can play a role in shaping magnetospheres and governing magnetospheric dynamics, particularly in weakly magnetized systems such as the moons of outer planets. However, MHD explicitly neglects such effects. We demonstrate the importance of ion cyclotron motion in the near space environment of Ganymede using 3-dimensional multi-fluid simulations to account for Galileo mag...

The morphology of impact craters on the icy Galilean satellites differs from craters on rocky bodies. The differences are thought due to the relative weakness of ice and the possible presence of sub-surface water layers. Digital elevation...
